LEARN · HOCL REFERENCE
What hypochlorous acid is, and isn't.
A short, honest reference for buyers evaluating HOCl for the first time. Chemistry, efficacy, regulatory context — in the order questions actually show up.
A one-minute primer
Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a weak acid produced by the immune system to neutralize pathogens. Industrially, it’s made by passing an electrical current through a dilute brine solution — the chloride ion gets oxidized into an HOCl-dominant equilibrium in water. The same molecule, made two ways.
Stabilized correctly, HOCl is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial that is also non-irritating at working concentrations. That combination — effective and skin-safe — is why it shows up in wound care, dental irrigation, fogging systems, food-contact sanitation, and cosmetic products.
The question buyers should ask isn’t “does HOCl work?” — it’s “did this bottle of HOCl arrive at the ppm on the label?”
Why the chemistry is fragile
HOCl exists in equilibrium with chlorine gas (below pH 5) and hypochlorite ion (above pH 7). Both neighbours are less effective — chlorine is a gas that volatilizes off, hypochlorite is the slow, high-pH form you’d rather not ship. Heat, UV, and iron contamination push the equilibrium. A bottle that was 300 ppm at fill can be 80 ppm six months later if it was made on the wrong line.
That’s the whole argument for buying factory-direct: you want to know what was in the bottle when it left the plant, on the paper, with the lot number.
What it’s used for
Surface sanitation
Foodservice contact surfaces, hospitality suites, clinic exam rooms, commercial fogging for large-volume disinfection. EPA-recognized working concentrations and contact times.
Wound & oral care
Irrigation and rinsing at clinical ppm. Non-cytotoxic at working strength, which is the part that matters when tissue is exposed.
Skincare & personal care
Face mists, post-procedure sprays, pet-skin care. Short contact, lower ppm, pH-balanced to not sting.
1) COA per lot — ppm + pH + ORP. 2) US manufacturing, not repack. 3) A named production contact, not a marketplace chat. If any of the three is missing, keep looking.
